It's race week again for Formula E. A new season is just around the corner with the ePrix of Mexico City being the first. Read everything you need to know ahead of the start of the new season here.
2023 Formula E calendar
After a long winter test before the turn of the year in Valencia, the FE season is about to start in earnest with the first ePrix in Mexico. At the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, electric cars will compete in their first race this year, on a calendar consisting of 16 races. New to the calendar are races in India, Brazil and South Africa. The FE will visit 11 different countries this year.

The new Gen3 cars
2023 is also the year of the new Gen3 cars in Formula E. The new cars will be used by each team and designed by Spark Racing Technology. Williams Advanced Engineering supplies the batteries and Hankook is the tyre supplier. The new cars achieve a maximum power output of 350KW (469hp), which is a big step up from the 250KW (335hp) of the Gen2 cars. The cars are also a lot lighter. Whereas cars in 2022 still weighed at least 900kg, they're now only 760kg.
2023 FE entry list
The new cars also mean a new field of participants among the teams. Mercedes, for instance, decided to pull the plug on the FE project after the Gen2 era ended and Techeetah's name will also be missed in Formula E in 2023.
Not to worry, as two big names have been added with Maserati and McLaren. This leaves the grid with a total of 11 teams, again including big brands like DS Penske, Jaguar, Porsche, Nissan and Andretti. There are seven different powertrain suppliers in 2023: DS E-Tense (DS Penske), NIO 33 ER9 (NIO 333 Racing), Mahindra M9Electro (Mahindra Racing and ABT), Nissan e-4ORCE 04 (Nissan and McLaren), Maserati Tipo Folgore (Maserati), Jaguar I-Type 6 (Jaguar and Envision), Porsche 99X Electric (Porsche and Andretti)
Alexander Sims, Nyck de Vries and Antonio Giovinazzi will no longer be on the grid in 2023. However, we do see the return of Rene Rast and the debut of Jake Hughes at McLaren, with Sacha Fenestraz also making his full-time debut in FE at Nissan.

Timetable ePrix of Mexico City 2023
The first race weekend is in Mexico City, which means staying up late for European viewers. The race weekend starts on Friday 13 January with the first free practice at 21:30 UK time. The second free practice, qualifying and the race take place on Saturday. Qualifying starts at 14:40 UK time. and the race starts at 19:03 UK time.
