Former Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger is said to be on Audi's radar for a role within the team from 2026. Exactly what position the German manufacturer wants to offer him is not clear. It may involve a position as super advisor like Niki Lauda was for Mercedes.

The dismissal of Mattia Binotto caused a domino effect in Formula 1. Frederic Vasseur takes over the Italian's role at Ferrari, leaving a spot vacant at Alfa Romeo. Andreas Seidl leaves for the team as CEO of Sauber and is replaced at McLaren by Andrea Stella. Williams too still has to look for a new team boss now that Jost Capito has left.

There were several rumours circulating about Binotto's possible replacement at Ferrari, including the name of Gerhard Berger. The former Formula 1 driver has a lot of experience in the sport as a former co-owner of Toro Rosso and current boss in the DTM. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport Berger is on Audi's radar. The Italian medium has heard this from sources within the Volkswagen Group. The German brand will partner Sauber as engine supplier from 2026.

Berger as advisor to Audi?

Berger denied his involvement with Ferrari. The Austrian will soon no longer be involved in the DTM's new management following the sale of IRT, the company that manages the DTM championship. Berger is keen to spend more time with his family, but who knows, he might be open to a new challenge in the future. If the deal goes through, Berger could take on a 'Lauda-like' role. The F1 legend held the position as an advisor to Mercedes for many years and could regularly be found at the track with team boss Toto Wolff. Berger, with all his experience and knowledge, could be a real addition for Audi.
