George Russell has had a learning season at Mercedes. In his first year of racing for the German formation, the talented driver faced several setbacks, forcing him to be patient. However, the Briton hopes to make a big step next season, he told The Race.

With his switch from Williams to Mercedes, a lot changed for Russell. Among other things, expectations went up as he suddenly competed for the points. However, Russell said he did not change his approach to race weekends.

Indeed, according to him, his task was clear: get as much out of the car as possible. "If we do get to the first race next year, and we realise we’ve got a car that’s capable of winning, I’m still gonna be approaching it exactly the same," he revealed.

Russell looks relaxed towards 2023

Russell hopes to be in contention for wins next season to lay claim to the world title. In doing so, he only realises that there will be multiple contenders who will also carry more experience.

"Everything I do right now is for performance and to try and get the best performance possible. Obviously the likes of Lewis and Max have more experience in that scenario. But if you go out and you put it on pole and win every race, you’ll be world champion. You’ve just got to focus on smaller details, and it’s in your own hands."
