Fernando Alonso will drive with a special helmet this coming weekend as a tribute to Sebastian Vettel. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the very last Formula 1 race of the four-time world champion, who will retire after this weekend.

Alonso will take Vettel's place at the Aston Martin team in 2023. He will become Lance Stroll's new teammate there. The Spaniard plans to honour his old rival with a special helmet this coming weekend. "Danke Seb, One last time sharing the track with you, It will be emotional and sad at the same time, but I wish you all the best for your next chapter", Alonso writes on Instagram.

The rivalry between Alonso and Vettel began in 2010 when the Spaniard made the switch to Ferrari. There were high expectations for this new collaboration. It was thought that Alonso would win a third world title with the Italian team. Unfortunately, the Spaniard did not manage to win with Ferrari. The 2010 season was the beginning of Vettel and Red Bull Racing's four-year dominance

Alonso and Vettel linked together

In the press conference, Alonso spoke highly of his old rival to GPblog and others. "I think my career is going to be linked to Sebastian in a way, because we fought for many things in the best seasons of our lives, probably. Even though it was on his side the outcome, always, I think it's going to be very linked."
