With his clipboard under his arm, Adrian Newey walks between the Formula 1 cars at every opportunity. Sharply taking in all the details, he uses the newly acquired insights to further develop the Red Bull car.

Although many teams use a photographer, the 63-year-old Red Bull engineer prefers to watch the cars himself. It is a hobby of his, he tells the site of Red Bull, something also reflected in his biography How to build a car. Besides, it makes him not dependent on the angle chosen by the photographer. He then works out his ideas on his drawing board in Milton Keynes and "and to be honest I don’t really have anything else to do at that point."

Red Bull team enjoyed the challenge

With the new rules introduced in 2022, he feared that the cars would all look the same, something he was by no means happy about. Partly his fears came true, but the variety of sidepods in particular made the cars very interesting again. He also says that the further he dived into the rules, the more he liked the new regulations: They made it quite complex. I think I can speak for the whole team—that overall, we’ve really enjoyed the challenge of this new set of regulations.”
