Fernando Alonso has received considerable criticism online for his statements about Lewis Hamilton. The Spaniard said that Max Verstappen's current performance has more value than those of the seven-time world champion. Alonso responds on Twitter to all the criticism.

It has been known for years that Alonso is not a big fan of Hamilton. The two drivers were teammates at McLaren in 2007. The year saw an exciting title fight with Ferrari drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa. However, Hamilton and Alonso did not get along very well. The Spaniard received a penalty at the Hungarian Grand Prix for blocking Hamilton in the pit lane. The two men ended the season with an equal number of points. Alonso left the team for Renault in 2008.

Speaking to De Telegraaf, Alonso said in Mexico that Hamilton's championships have less value because the Briton has only had to fight against his teammate [read: Nico Rosberg]. Therefore, he values Verstappen's world titles more because the Dutchman has had to fight against other drivers with equivalent or better material.

Alonso tries to clear the air

However, the Alpine driver is revisiting his comments online to clear the air. Indeed, on Twitter, fans are not happy with Alonso's statements. It is not the first time the Spaniard has shouted things about Hamilton. During the Belgian Grand Prix, Alonso made a striking statement, saying that Hamilton only knows how to drive when he starts at the front.

"And again… Please, all the titles are amazing, well deserved and inspiring. Incomparable to each other and let’s enjoy champions and legends of our current time. Tired of the continuous search for headlines. Let's enjoy them," Alonso writes on his Twitter.
