Sainz reacts to P3: "Harder than expected"
Carlos Sainz started from pole position and got off the line well but could only manage third place. Red Bull were far too dominant for Ferrari and Sainz could've lost his podium place to George Russell if the Mercedes driver hadn't have made his mistake.
Harder than expected
Sainz had the advantage by starting from pole position and he led comfortably going into the first corner. But Sainz explains what went wrong in terms of the tyres and pace.
"Unfortunately it was harder than expected. We did a good start and restart but the pace wasn't there. A lot of overheating on the tyres. The package wasn't there this weekend but we finished on the podium. We'll take it," Sainz said to Martin Brundle after the race.
Red Bull and Verstappen now have a huge advantage in both World Championships and it actually looks like they have one hand on the trophies already. Sainz wants his team to analyse what happened today, and believes they will be stronger in next weekend's Dutch Grand Prix.
"Red Bull were on their own today. We have to learn why at this track we weren't competitive. Zandvoort should be a better track for us," he added.
