Alexander Albon suddenly had the chance to make the switch to Red Bull Racing in the middle of the season in 2019. However, it didn't yield great success, as he had to make way for Sergio Perez after only a year and a half. According to the Thai, the criticism he received afterwards is not entirely justified, he told Auto, Motor und Sport in an interview.

"It was the experience that was missing. If you look at the gap between Checo (Perez, ed.) and Max at the beginning of last year, it was no different for me," Albon commented. "I was criticised a lot for my performance. Then the 2021 break came in handy. When you're not driving yourself, you can step back and suddenly see the whole picture."

The driver came to the conclusion that he was not getting enough out of his car and went behind the scenes to work on himself. While Albon contributed to Red Bull's successes in 2021, he was also to be seen in the DTM the same year.

Albon to stay on at Williams

At the end of the year, however, he was given the opportunity to make up for the departure of George Russell at Williams. With that team he has done so well this calendar year that he recently extended his contract. For his teammate Nicholas Latifi the future is still uncertain.
