On Tuesday Alpine announced on social media that Oscar Piastri will take over from Fernando Alonso for next season, when the Spaniard leaves for Aston Martin. However, Piastri himself did not make the announcement, leading to the belief that the Australian himself was unaware of the news. A few hours later this appeared to be the case when he came forward with his own statement.

It stated that he is not aware of his contract with Alpine and that he will not be driving for the French team in 2023. With that last sentence, it became clear that the 2021 F2 champion therefore probably already has a contract with another team, reportedly McLaren. At Alpine, however, they are not satisfied and intend to hold Piastri to his contract, even if it has to be fought out in court.

Szafnauer expects good cooperation with Piastri

According to The Race the team is very confident about their legal position in this situation. Already Alpine said through a spokesman that they have done nothing wrong with the statement and therefore really count on Piastri being an Alpine driver in 2023.

Team boss Otmar Szafnauer has even said that he is taking a possible battle in court into account and that if there are no hard feelings between both parties they will have to work together in 2023. So it will be a matter of waiting to see which party is right. Can Piastri leave Alpine or is he stuck with his contract for 2023?
