Mercedes are keen to get into the battle at the front of the field but Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were unable to keep pace in the Austrian Grand Prix. However, Hamilton is hopeful he can make things difficult for the front-runners.

Hamilton stressed that he does not yet know what to expect from his Mercedes car this weekend, but expressed his hope that the updates will do their job. "We are making changes to the car. I am hoping we discover something this weekend," he stated during the press conference on Sky Sports.

Hamilton wants to be in the fight

Will the updates bring him back into the fray? "I hope so, that's what we're all working towards," is the Mercedes driver's answer, who states that he 'doesn't care' that he hasn't won a race yet this year. "I believe that at some point we will be able to compete with these guys, whether it is this weekend or in five races' time," he continued.

For Hamilton, then, it is not so much about the final destination, but more about the journey. "I do believe at some stage we will be able to compete with these guys, whether it's this weekend or in five races time," the Briton continued. "I am proud of the experience we have had." Hamilton therefore sees that experience as a valuable lesson, making his team appreciate it even more as it finds its way back to the top.
