There is much speculation in the paddock about the future of Daniel Ricciardo. McLaren is already testing with Colton Herta from the IndyCar Series, but Oscar Piastri would also have a chance at the seat. BBC F1 journalist Andrew Benson says Alexander Albon and Sebastian Vettel could be added to the options.

In 2021 Ricciardo swapped Renault for McLaren. Apart from one victory at Monza in the same year, the Australian's results are disappointing at McLaren. Reportedly, there is a clause in Ricciardo's contract which allows him to terminate the contract early. The British team is therefore already looking around for a replacement if Ricciardo leaves McLaren after 2022.

Enough choice for McLaren

One of the interesting options for McLaren is Formula 2 champion Piastri. The Aussie is in the spotlight of Williams, who may rent him for two years from Alpine. It is still unclear if this option will go through, so McLaren would look further.

Herta tested with a 2021 McLaren on Monday but does not appear to be a serious option for next season. The name of Patricio O'Ward has also been mentioned less for some time, he currently drives for McLaren's IndyCar team.

Experienced F1 drivers

Benson says on the website of the BBC that there are two more candidates for a seat at McLaren, namely Albon and Vettel. Albon is making a strong comeback in the sport at Williams after a year on the sidelines. Vettel could be interesting as this would immediately clear the way for Ricciardo to join Aston Martin.
