Sergio Perez has been to the stewards to clarify whether or not he exceeded the track limits. The Mexican told his story and based on the video images and his statement the stewards decided to impose a hefty penalty.

Stewards pass judgement on Perez incident

In qualifying, it is usual for a driver to lose time if he has exceeded track limits, but in Perez's case, it was not until Q3 that it was discovered he had not coloured within the lines in the previous session. Most drivers went four wheels off the track at the final corner, but the Red Bull Racing driver did it in an unusual place. As a result, it came to light later.

The Mexican was given a hefty penalty: because the offence happened in Q2 but the stewards said they were too busy at the time, they decided not to look at it until after qualifying. The Red Bull Racing driver, therefore, falls behind Lewis Hamilton and will even be outside the top ten: based on the results in Q2, he will have to start the sprint race from 13th place.
