Fernando Alonso has an expiring contract, but it is an open secret that the Spaniard will renew his commitment at Alpine. The two-time world champion will soon sign a contract that will ensure that he can also be admired in Formula 1, at least in 2023.

This is reported by the Italian branch of Motorsport.com. Alonso has indicated on several occasions that he is not yet finished with Formula 1. Although he knows that a third world championship is virtually impossible at Alpine, he really enjoys driving at the highest level.

It is not yet a very successful season for Alonso. In eight Grands Prix he managed to score 16 points so far. He achieved his best final classification in the last two weekends in Monaco and Azerbaijan. Teammate Esteban Ocon meanwhile has 31 points, but he owes that lead mainly to less bad luck.

Piastri heading for Williams?

The fact that Alonso will extend his contract has implications for Oscar Piastri. The current Formula 2 champion belongs to the junior program of the French racing team, but there seems to be no place for the Australian next season. After all, Ocon is fixed until 2024. However, Alpine has found a solution for Piastri. He will presumably be stabled at the Williams team for two years.
