Christijan Albers disagrees with the opinion that Sergio Perez is a title contender after his victory at the Monaco Grand Prix. According to the Dutch analyst, the Mexican is still clearly the second driver within the team and has simply been very lucky.

During the race, Red Bull Racing chose to call Perez in first for new tyres. This gamble worked out well, as the Mexican managed to overtake Charles Leclerc after the Ferrari driver came in too late. According to Albers, Red Bull did not want to take the risk with Max Verstappen.

"He did drive super well, but it's so forced. He's just been lucky that they made the right call," he says in the Formula 1 podcast for the Telegraaf.

Verstappen still the better driver

According to Albers the Mexican had an advantage over Verstappen. The Dutchman likes an aggressive front end, but in the streets of Monaco Verstappen was searching with his new RB18. Perez has a very different driving style that provided an advantage especially in Monte Carlo. The difference between the teammates in the driver's championship is only fifteen points, but Albers does not think Perez is a title contender.

"Then he comes to Monaco [after the team orders in Spain] and then you will always see that vibe, and that irritates me a bit, that he also runs well through Monaco. Then all at once you get these moments of, see, Perez is a good driver. Let's be very honest, Max is still of a completely different caliber. If you ask me if I think it's fair, I say no, because Max is just the much better driver. I think Checo has had two weekends where he just had some luck," Albers ends.
