Lewis Hamilton is undoubtedly one of the best Formula 1 drivers of all time, but in 2022 the seven-time world champion is having a tough time. The Mercedes car does not yet have the intended speed and so Hamilton is driving his laps in the midfield. Criticism of the Briton has been increasing recently and Fernando Alonso knows better than anyone what it is like to be in his rival's position.

Alonso recognizes Hamilton situation

In the Grand Prix at the circuit of Imola Hamilton did not get further than thirteenth place. George Russell meanwhile knows how to drive around the problems, because in all Grands Prix he managed to finish in the top five. Alonso is convinced that Hamilton is still a fast driver, but that his situation is also inherent to how things work in Formula 1.

"That's how it goes in Formula 1, and that's how it's always gone," Alonso said to the likes of Speedweek.com. "When Ayrton Senna won his titles, he had the fastest car. When I became world champion, I had the same, and the same goes for Michael Schumacher." In the pinnacle of motorsport, you can be as good as you like, if the equipment lets you down, you're hopeless against the competition.

Alonso can relate because, despite his early world titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006, the counter remained at two championships due to unfortunate timed switches. "Lewis broke all the records because he had the fastest car. Right now he's driving very well but only finishing 13th. That's Formula 1."
