Charles Leclerc set the fastest time during the first free practice session of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. However, Max Verstappen follows right behind the Ferrari driver on other tyres.

Leclerc set his fastest time on the soft tyre, while Verstappen was only one tenth slower on the hard tyre. The Dutchman can therefore certainly improve his time on a softer compound.

Valtteri Bottas completes the top three. Carlos Sainz follows on P4, with both AlphaTauri drivers P5 and P6. Sergio Perez does not have the same speed as his teammate Verstappen and has to make do with seventh place for now.

Mercedes sinks to the bottom

At Mercedes, there still seems to be a lot of room for improvement. Lewis Hamilton only finished in P9, and George Russell is at the bottom of the timesheet on P15. At McLaren, things are already looking a little better compared to last week with a P11 and P13.
