Possible new team of Andretti already faces first hurdle
- GPblog.com
Mario Andretti announced on February 18 that son Michael is in the process of setting up a Formula One team. Although the paperwork has gone towards the FIA, for now there seems little chance that F1's governing body will do anything with it.
Formula 1 not working on new teams
Late Friday night Andretti came out with the news that his son had submitted a request to the FIA for his own Formula One team. It is expected that Andretti Global will be the eleventh team on the grid starting in 2024, but The Race reports that the FIA is not currently in a position to consider new teams.
The Andrettis have reportedly contacted Formula 1, but the sport is not actively looking for new teams at the moment. This would mean the potentially new team has to wait for now.
Acquisition of Sauber
At the end of 2021, news emerged that Andretti would attempt to take over Alfa Romeo Sauber. This deal ultimately fell through, leaving Andretti to look for another way to enter F1. Should the team be on the grid in 2024, it will be the first time since Haas F1 in 2016 that a new team has entered F1.
