Andretti is going to take a shot at Formula 1 after all. Michael Andretti has submitted a request to the FIA to start his own team starting in 2024, father Mario reported on Twitter.

Andretti is a well-known name in auto racing, but mainly in America. Mario Andretti won the Indy 500 and the Formula One World Championship as a driver and saw his son Michael drive thirteen more races in F1 for McLaren. Now the Andretti name really seems to be returning to Formula 1.

Andretti in F1

First there were rumors about a possible takeover. Andretti was in talks with Sauber to take over the team which now races in Formula 1 under the Alfa Romeo name. That deal, however, came to nothing, so Andretti started looking again. Michael manages the racing business and would like to go to F1.

That now seems to be coming true, as Mario Andretti posted a tweet saying, ''Michael has applied to the FIA to field a new F1 team starting in 2024. His entry, Andretti Global, has the resources and checks every box. He is awaiting the FIA's determination.'' This would mean that there may be 11 teams on the grid from 2024 instead of 10.
