Pirelli's clear statement: 'It was not our decision'

The Formula 1 teams are preparing for the new season, which begins in the coming weeks. Pirelli are also working hard behind the scenes to get optimally ready for an exciting year and to be of service to the teams.
The fixed tire allocation will also apply in 2022, Mario Isola stressed in conversation with the official website of Formula 1. While it used to be possible for teams to self-determine the amount of each tyre type they brought, that changed during the 2020 season.
FIA gives Pirelli extra task
In that year, the FIA decided for one year that not the teams, but Pirelli would allocate the number of each type of tyre each race. At the end of the season, however, the teams indicated that they were satisfied with this way of working. Not only was it clear to the teams what they could anticipate, they also believed that the new policy was a lot fairer.
"It was not our decision at the end to continue with this fixed allocation," explains Isola. "The teams told us if they have a fixed allocation and it is the same for everybody – so there is no advantage for one or the other – they can start planning on this fixed allocation." However, he cannot determine whether the current rule will also be present in 2023.
