It was a dark day in 2021 for the Spa-Francorshamps circuit. The literal collapse of the Grand Prix was a huge disappointment, but that was dwarfed by the personal grief the organizers had to deal with.

Tragic incident

Shortly before the Grand Prix was to be held, the circuit lost director Nathalie Maillet. She died tragically due to a private incident. After several months without a director, the circuit has now found a successor for Maillet. Amaury Bertholomé was appointed as the new general manager at a meeting of the Board of Directors.

In a press release, the new director says he is looking forward to his task: "I am very happy to participate in the development of the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, which is a strong economic, sports and tourism tool for our region," Bertholomé said in a press release. "The ambitious strategy launched for the circuit a few years ago will allow it to remain on the map of the essential circuits in motor sports, where the most beautiful races in the world are held."

No certainty

Indeed, Spa is one of the favorite circuits for many drivers in Formula 1. Nevertheless, a tough task awaits Bertholomé. Not only has the infrastructure around the circuit been a major problem for years, there is also no certainty yet that Spa will remain on the Formula 1 calendar after this year. One of his main tasks will therefore be to preserve the iconic circuit for Formula 1.
