Red Bull Racing managed to win a world title this season for the first time in eight years. Although it also enjoyed four seasons of success with Sebastian Vettel between 2010 and 2013, Helmut Marko believes their 2021 performance was the Austrian stable's greatest ever.

For several years it was extremely difficult for anyone to get close to Mercedes, but Max Verstappen showed this season that it is indeed possible. The Dutchman had to work hard to compete with Lewis Hamilton, but proved to be the better of the pair in the end. According to Marko, the intensity that Red Bull and Verstappen had to deliver this season was greater than ever before. He says this in conversation with Motorsport.com.

In the interview he looks back at the last race in Abu Dhabi, where Verstappen overtook his competitor on the last lap. While Marko can usually handle the tension of Formula 1, this time he was on the edge of his seat watching the race unfold. The Red Bull advisor felt it was more than justified for Verstappen to receive the top prize this month.

Marko understands Mercedes' reaction

Mercedes were angry with the race committee after the race because of their decision to bring the safety car in early in order to allow the race to continue for one more lap. Marko understood the reaction of the Germans, but at the same time he's of the opinion that they have to accept the result. He is therefore pleased that Mercedes finally decided to end the protest.
