Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez is a veteran on the Formula 1 grid, and a popular one as well. The 34-year-old Mexican is in his 14th season as a driver in the premier class of motorsport, but success hasn’t come easily for the Red Bull driver. Prior to joining the current superpower in the sport, Perez had only one win in ten years, but since then has stood atop the podium five times in two and a half seasons. He won the Constructors World Championship with Red Bull in 2022 and 2023.

Sergio Perez in 2024

Perez is currently competing in his 14th Formula 1 season but is having to try and compete with his teammate and the current powerhouse, Max Verstappen. Perez managed to claim two victories in 2023 but has since struggled and has seen his teammate atop the podium for a record-breaking 10 times consecutively. With speculation that he might be forced out of the team, he is no doubt looking to regain his form and win more races for Red Bull in 2024.

Perez started the season by doing everything the team wanted him to. He finished second in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. The Mexican wasn't in a position to take the win after Verstappen won the Australian Grand Prix but he returned to the podium in Japan and China. His early season form suggests he can persuade Marko and Horner for a contract extension at Red Bull Racing.

Perez has also recently signed a deal with McDonalds in Mexico, which sees a ‘Menu Checo’ available for those in his home country.

Sergio Perez biography

He only succeeded before Formula 1 in the British Formula 3 International Series (National) and GP2 Series. Still, once in F1, he scored points from the get-go and solidified himself on the grid for the next decade and more.

In his debut season, he scored points but wasn’t able to find the top 10 in the Drivers’ Championship, and this was clear motivation as he only finished outside the desired top 10 once in the rest of his career.

Red Bull success for Perez

After claiming his first victory in Formula 1, many believed that Checo might take a break from the sport, with his contract expiring at Racing Point. However, that wasn’t the case. The Mexican switched to Red Bull to partner up with Verstappen and immediately made an impact, claiming four podiums and one race win. These helped propel Red Bull to second place in the Constructors’ Championship, behind only Mercedes.

More podiums and victories came flooding in the following year as Verstappen stepped it up another notch. Perez found his groove for the Austrian team. He secured nine podiums and two race wins to his name, as he finished third overall and helped Red Bull win the Constructors’ Championship for the first time since 2013.

Sergio Perez popularity

Perez is one of the more popular drivers on the grid, especially in his home country of Mexico. His dedication and performances in F1 have made him a hero in Mexico for all those who follow and want to be involved in the sport. He has struggled this season, which has disheartened some Red Bull staff and fans, but his love from Mexican fans still runs strong at every Grand Prix on the Calendar.

What is Sergio Perez's greatest strength as an F1 driver?

Despite struggling in qualifying and some races this season, people also forget that the Mexican has won multiple races alongside his teammate Verstappen. He is also a key contributor to Red Bull, with his work ethic and tyre management at the forefront. His ability to lap at a strong pace whilst managing his tyres, alongside the pace of the Red Bull, allows him to fight his way through the field and make his way into strong points finishes.
